Week 45: LUX, Symphonic Gizzard & Pluribus
Weeknote #45.25, from to .
Published on .Listened #
- To Phantom Island by King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, as anticipation for their concert on Friday in Den Bosch. This was my latest attempt at getting into this album, but besides the first few tracks, this one just didn't grab me.
- ⭐ To Rosalia's new album, LUX. From the first listen this is an undeniable work of excellency. Beautiful, emotional writing powered by amazing classical compositions. It demands multiple, focused listens to really dig into the breadth of its creative, shining peaks. An instant classic.
- To Alma's Cove by Yuuf. I learned about this band this week and was immediately captivated by their low-volume, dreamy sound.
Watched #
- Continued Ghosts' season 2 with episodes 6-8.
- 28 Years Later, rented on Pathé Thuis. I really liked it, perhaps because I already knew that it's part one of a planned trilogy, so I treated it as an introduction. It boats lots of creative visual swings and it has some insane yet emotional moments which I did not expect at all. The very last couple of minutes are super weird tonally, though.
- Bugonia in Filmhallen. It's one of the great ones from Yorgos Lanthimos and delivers amazing performances. My review.
- The premiere of I Love L.A. in HBO Max. It's fun as a satire and embracing that its characters are hard-to-like.
- Ernest & Celestine on Netflix. Gorgeous visuals and lovely story. My short review.
- ⭐ The Pluribus premiere on Apple TV. I'm glad to experience a new Vince Gilligan project and see Rhea Seehorn leading it. The first episode was fantastic but the second one, while still very good and fun, felt very different tonally which was weird. Still very much looking forward to the rest.
- Thelma & Louise (for the first time!) on Prime Video. I absolutely loved it.
Played #
- Continued going through the revised ending of Hades II.
- Had a couple of runs on Utopia Must Fall.
- Went back to Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5. Felt like roaming around Night City again; it's one of my favourite "digital worlds".
Moved #
- Played 8 matches of table tennis at the office and 5 matches with my wife, on a public table nearby our place.
Went out #
- To Game Over to play their Top Secret escape room with friends, to celebrate my wife's birthday. We barely managed to escape with a handful of hints. The last room was filled with lasers that you had to avoid spy-thriller style, which was really cool. I thought some of the puzzles, or their hints, were not intuitive enough, but it was overall a fun experience.
- ⭐ To Mainstage Brabanthallen in Den Bosch for King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard's orchestral live show, supported by Sinfonia Rotterdam. The first half was the entire Phantom Island with the symphonic orchestra which was really nice but it was the second half that made the whole thing super special. Listening to Crumbling Castle and Dragon with an orchestra was an incredible experience. Specially the ending of Crumbling Castle with the full orchestral and drums only; I ascended. The entire show was live-streamed and can be rewatched in YouTube. Also, got a t-shirt and the vinyl for Butterfly 3000 (Portuguese edition, so Borboleta 3000)! Here's some pics. I love this band.
Read #
- Started and finished Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis.
- 'Heavy metal is healing teens on the Blackfeet Nation' by B. ‘Toastie’ Oaster for High Country News. A brilliant, inspiring long-read.
